Tipos de Templo

O Grande Hypostyle Hall no Templo de Karnak.

Os templos que os egiptológos chamam de ‘mansões de Deus’ são os que mais se aproximam da nossa definição de lugar de adoração. Estes incluem grandes templos para uma única divindade, ou para várias divinidades, assim como os templos mortuários, dedicados ao rei morto (efetivamente, deuses). Nestes, grandes exércitos de pessoas com papéis diferentes adoravam e cuidavam dos deuses. Mas, ao contrário dos outros templos, eles eram complexos particulares sem comunicação entre os deuses e o público.
Templos mortuários eram freqüentemente associados com templos de vales que eram meras saídas impressionantes sem função religiosa. Também haviam templos especialistas como os templos Ka, a casa da alma do rei morto, templos Sed-festival para celebrar o jubileu do rei, templos de sol e templos de coroação. Muitos templos foram adicionados durante os anos para se tornarem complexos gigantes com múltiplas funções.
